The San Francisco Contemplarium
By Seanan Fong
Why we support it
The San Francisco Contemplarium imagines a world where everyone feels a deep sense of belonging, where no one has to face life’s hardest moments alone. In this world, when people feel lost, uncertain, or overwhelmed, they know exactly where to go to reconnect with themselves, with others, and with something greater than both.
The Contemplarium is bringing that vision to life. In San Francisco, it is building a living model of what a supportive community can look like: a place where reflection, connection, and care are part of everyday life. Its goal is to create the backbone of a strong, compassionate community locally and to inspire similar sanctuaries of belonging in cities around the world.
Root Cause of the Problem:
Despite constant digital connectivity, many people experience isolation, stress, and a lack of meaningful connection. Traditional communal and reflective spaces have diminished, leaving few places dedicated to stillness, presence, and shared reflection. Daily life emphasizes speed and productivity, crowding out opportunities for grounding and collective wellbeing.
